Mark creates traditional and contemporary portraits from his studio in the historic town of Excelsior Springs, Missouri. As a young adult, he worked as a commercial illustrator but discovered that computer illustration couldn’t meet his desire for the tactile quality of painting. After a short trip to Europe, Mark turned to landscape painting then to his first love, figure drawing, and portraiture.
“My commitment when painting a portrait goes beyond capturing a representation of physical features. I have the conviction that all humankind is made in the image of God and has an elevated dignity above all of creation… not determined by ethnicity, color, gender, age or social status…an intrinsic value that can not be manufactured….because of this, I feel a deep responsibility and joy when I paint a portrait. My hope is that no matter who I paint, you will see the beauty of being human.”
